Resumen de La teoría de la evolución en el contexto británico del siglo XIX

En el contexto británico del siglo XIX en su conjunto fue donde surgió una de las teorías más importantes en la historia de la ciencia, el darwinismo. Este trabajo presenta, primero, los antecedentes sobre el estudio de la evolución antes de Darwin, para después retomar el marco explicativo vigente en las ciencias británicas en ese momento, la teología natural. En ese marco se dio la explicación de Darwin, que fue muy influyente dentro de la naciente comunidad científica, aunque seriamente malinterpretada y adaptada. La última sección del artículo se enfocará en resumir la parte final del siglo XIX, sobre todo con el periodo conocido como “el eclipse del darwinismo”, para dar una idea de la diversidad de propuestas evolutivas vigentes en Inglaterra.

It was in the British context of the 19th century as a whole that one of the most important theories in the history of science, Darwinism, emerged. This paper first presents the background to the study of evolution before Darwin, and then takes up the explanatory framework that was current in British science at the time, natural theology. Within that framework Darwin’s explanation was given, which was very influential within the nascent scientific community, although seriously misinterpreted and adapted. The last section of the article will focus on summarizing the final part of the 19th century, especially the period known as «the eclipse of Darwinism», to give an idea of the diversity of evolutionary proposals prevalent in England.
