Cuando la vigilancia del mar se convierte en la mejor estrategia. Fortines y atalayas de los ejércitos romano y bárquida en la costa de Alicante

    Presentamos desde una óptica militar las principales conclusiones de un estudio que se inició revisando unos pequeños poblados iberos de los siglos ii-i a. C. de la costa norte de Alicante, que resultaron ser fortines de l guerras sertorianas. Al estar conectados visualmente, constituían un eficaz sistema de vigilancia del tráfico de las naves senatoriales entre los puertos de Ebusus y Carthago Nova. La efectividad de la estrategia nos condujo a retrotraer la investigación a cronologías anteriores y, así, descubrimos que el litoral alicantino desde Dénia hasta el río Segura ya estuvo fortificado por el ejército cartaginés durante la segunda guerra púnica con torres y pequeños fortines, algunos de los cuales fueron reocupados por las tropas sertorianas más de cien años después. En el proyecto de investigación I+D que iniciamos ahora pretendemos documentar arqueológicamente esas atalayas de vigilancia construidas a finales del siglo ii a. C. y argumentar con dat histórico-arqueológicos que la costa norteafricana, la isla de Ibiza y la costa alicantina conforman un espacio marítimo que fue escenario de conflictos militares antiguos y modernos.

    We present, from a military perspective, the main conclusions of a study that began with the examination of some Iberian settlements of the second and first centuries BC on the north coast of Alicante, which turned out to be strongholds of the Sertorian Wars. Since they were visually connected, they served as an effective system of surveillance for the traffic of senatorial ships between the ports of Ebusus and Carthago Nova. The effectiveness of the strategy led us to go back to previous chronologies and thus we discovered that the Carthaginian Army had already fortified the coastline of Alicante, from Dénia to the Segura river, during the second Punic War, with towers and small strongholds. More than a hundred years later, some of these strongholds were reoccupied by the Sertorian troops. In the R&D research project we are launching, we intend to document on the ground these watchtowers that were built at the end of the 3rd Century BC. We also want to endorse through historical-archaeological data that the North coast of Africa, the island of Ibiza and the coastline of Alicante form a maritime area that was the scenario of ancient and modern military conflicts
