In October 1998, the IPA delegation in Castro Verde was alerted about a recently disturbed and violated burial. Located at the Monte Novo-it-Rez estate, in Ourique (central-south of Portugal), the grave was identified has a one-piece marble coffin, whose cover and closing structure had been recently destroyed and its interior completely revolved. Once the site was still vulnerable to further destruction, a salvage excavation was undertaken in order to preserve the existing structures.
Fieldwork lasted about a week and the coffin was removed and stored at the IPA delegation in Castro Verde. The recovered osteological remains clearly indicate the occurrence of two different inhumations and the analysis of the structure and its associated materials point towards a chronology between the second half of the 4th century and the second half of the 5th century AD.
