This article presents a geoarchaeological analysis of the environmental context of the Penedo dos Mouros castle (Gouveia, Portugal) and discusses its situation in the landscape and the geomorphological evolution of the surrounding area. Fieldwork at the site, situated in the so-called "Mondego platform", was undertaken between 1999 and 2002. The site consists of a series of structures built over and around a granitic tor, and that were abandoned between the 10th4 1th centuries AD. The geological, geomorphological and archaeological data are discussed to erect a working hypothesis concerning the function of the site as a castle, as it does not possess any wide field of vision of the surrounding land, apparently not showing the traditional features of the medieval castles of the region.
