This paper presents a model in which the work schedule results from the equilibrium between the .rm's decision and workers' preferences. A technology which organises the inputs in shifts has been considered for this objective, and the workers' preferences are de.ned over the di erent feasible work-days. In this context, the treatment given to the concepts of shiftwork and workday are key innovations. The existence or not of capital constraints, the "fatigue" e ect, and the preferences regarding leisure determine the amount of inputs utilized as well as the timing of work.
