    Fertile Soil. - Characteristics of the Bourbonnais area in France made it a fertile place where left-wing political forces took root in a short time and at an early date. A thriving union movement and very tense social relations between big landholders and tenant farmers were factors leading to the establishment of a Red stronghold. The creation of the Federation of Farm Workers' Unions at the start of the 20th century signaled the beginning of a mobilization of peasants in Allier Department.

    Le Bourbonnais présente certaines caractéristiques favorables à l'implantation précoce et rapide de la gauche. Des rapports sociaux très conflictuels (grande propriété et métayage dominants) et un dynamisme syndical constituent un terreau propice aux " rouges ". La création, dans les premières années du XXe siècle, de la Fédération des syndicats des travailleurs de la terre marque le début de la mobilisation paysanne dans l'Allier.
