From Tethering Horses to Impregnating Women and Cooking. Exploring a Few Altaic Notions of Hot and Cold. Tethering of horses, widely used among the Turkic-Mongol peoples in Siberia and central Asia, can only be explained through native ideas about hot and cold. They can be likened to other practices justified in thermal terms in activities as diverse as cooking, reproduction and medicine. This study of an obscure detail in techniques related to horseback-riding sheds light on large parts of the system of symbols and on categories that persist in shaping the world view.
