In the Sierra Morena (Don Quixote I, 23¿31) we see characters with torn clothes, half naked, or in the act of disguising themselves or exchanging pieces of clothing. We see the processes of social margination, disintegration of being, and the disassembling of gender constructions. By manipulating their clothing, characters explore aspects of their being that they had been forced to repress or keep hidden. Thanks to the transformative capacity of apparel, whose essential materiality preserves the memory of their positions in the community during this disruption, the characters can achieve illusory personal restitution and social integration.
