  • This article proposes an approach to the contemporary Spanish documentary far removed from the great filmmakers and productions which have had an impact on mass audiences and given rise to great expectations in recent years. Examining lesser known works in order to understand today’s documentary is a double-sided political gesture. On the one hand, it is intended as a vindication of marginal production as a wellspring for change in non-fiction cinema. On the other, it seeks to promote a number of works of great aesthetic and ethical value which might otherwise escape attention due to their non-official status. The article is organized along two formal axes, that of the false documentary and that of the abstract observational standpoint.
