Resumen de Five judges' evaluation of audiotaped string performance in international Competiton

  • This study examined the scores generated by an international string competition's contestant selection jury. Audiotape performances of 78 string instrumentalists were evaluated on a 5-anchor 9-point scale by 5 expert judges as a screening for entry to the final, live, round of the competition. Judges were charged to evaluate each player globally on a scale of not qualified to qualified without reservations without specific criteria or rubrics provided. Inter-rater reliability forth final rankings showed Cronbach's alpha of.90. Cases of disagreement (spread of rankings by 2 or mare anchored scale points) werefound36% of the time. The data suggest that a panel of expert judges, given general task descriptions, is able to reliably rank the performance achievement of advanced musicians. The data provided 00 opportunity to discuss reliability and validity of panel judging of musical performance.
