Aunque tras su llegada a Finlandia, en el año 1500, los gitanos fueron perseguidos, a finales del siglo XX la sociedad finlandesa empezó a aceptar a los romà como minoría nacional. Desde entonces, los gobiernos han tomado medidas para mejorar la situación laboral, social y educativa de esta minoría.
Sin embargo, los aspectos relacionados con la salud no han recibido la misma atención que la educación o la cultura. Los gitanos todavía encuentran los hospitales aterradores. Por eso, diferentes instituciones organizan jornadas sobre educación sanitaria. A pesar de los cambios que se han producido en los últimos años, muchos gitanos finlandeses padecen discriminación en su vida diaria. La escuela, los medios de comunicación y el mundo laboral son sólo algunos ámbitos en los que la discriminación y los prejuicios siguen existiendo.

Although Gipsies were prosecuted in the year 1.500 at their arrival in Finland, at the end of the 20th. century, Finnish society started to accept Roma as a national minority. Since then, governments have taken many steps in order to improve the working, social and educational situation of this minority.
Still, the issues related to health have not received the same attention as education and culture. Gipsies still look at hospitals as terrifying places. That is why many institutions organize conferences about health education. In spite of the changes taken place throughout the last years, many Finnish Gipsies suffer from discrimination in their daily life. Schools, media and labour market are only a few of the fields in which discrimination and prejudices still exist.
