Delineating historical periods presupposes certain assumptions, hence necessitating a second look at why we equate periods in film history with political eras. Even though the Peron government (1946-1955) was the first to impose a policy of State-controlled mass media, rather than referring to this as “Peron-era films,” we should designate this as the beginning of an era in cinema marked by State intervention.
The article gives a brief overview of the positive and negative aspects of this policy, taking into consideration how it began and how it influenced Argentine film.
