Even though cinematic construction of national identity in Cuba previous to 1959 is sparse, two periods stand out. In spite of the fact that national identity in Cuba is always portrayed within foreign designs, the first period is the outcome of autochthonous film production of the 1930s, and the second is highly influenced by the proliferation of coproductions with Spain and Mexico during the 1940s. Cuban productions elaborated a national identity on the basis of the country-city dichotomy, while the co-productions focused on the ethnic differences which segregated Creole-Spanish and Black-African societies
