  • Although the Vera Cruz Film Company was generally underestimated, this study suggests that it was responsible for establishing the basis for future Brazilian productions. Its ninth film, O Cangaceiro (1953), directed by Lima Barreto, incorporated a multitude of foreign practices to create an emblematic image of Brazil. Thus reconstructing history as a national myth, O Cangaceiro clears the way for the cinematographic representation of Brazilian reality.
