This paper discusses Brazilian characters and landscapes in American and European films. Before and during World War II, Hollywood paints an image of tropical scenery with gentle natives, suitable for high-class tourists. French film-makers discover people of color and the Amazonian jungle. Later, this unfolds in a new version of the lost paradise, with variations on sexual experiences and racial intercourse. During recent years, foreign films have looked at Brazil with mixed imagery of Hell abstract and Heaven
