  • In the sixties, the Brazilian North-East region gave the Cinema Novo movement an opportunity to develop a truly national film-making culture, both in terms of aesthetics as well as content. The political commitment of the film-makers ensured international recognition. Thirty years on, as the region again becomes fashionable on cinema screens, the economic and social situation changes: whilst all directors recognise their debt to Cinema Novo, each puts forward a personal view of the abstract Nordeste.
