  • Comparing Modernism and Cinema Novo implies a comprehensive knowledge of both movements. As a first step, this lecture recalls several dates in Brazilian history, which show its strong aspiration to form an independent culture.

    Filmmakers of the sixties were in dialogue with other new cinemas while maintaining strong personal links with and substantial artistic inspiration from, modernist authors. Joaquim Pedro de Andrade merges as the major go-between among these two highpoints in Brazilian culture, separated by very abstract different political contexts.
