Film critic Salles Gomes was a disciple of the Modernist Movement and a master for the Cinema Novo generation. He was the head of the Brazilian Film Library and the first film teacher at São Paulo University. His book on Jean Vigo announces his major work on Humberto Mauro. Paulo Emilio’s writings show a radicalization and a strong commitment to Brazilian Film. Even if his critiques were overly harsh, his brilliant use of paradox and nuance stimulated sophisticated abstract film studies and research on local film history.
