The opposition «Dionysus against the Crucified», explicitly proposed in Ecce homo, is however analysed more carefully in a posthumous fragment dated in the spring of 1888. Nietzsche resorts there to the Greek pagan religion in order to confront the Christian monotheist religion. but he mainly and more fundamentally attempts to oppose two radically differing conceptions of the world and the human being: that which falls under the sign of Dionysus is set against the conception of western metaphysical thought, which Nietzsche identifies with the symbol of the «Crucified».
