Resumen de El conde de Aranda y el teatro: los bailes de máscaras en la polémica sobre la licitud del teatro
El teatro y las diversiones públicas en general ocuparon durante el siglo XVIII un lugar central en las discusiones entre los ilustrados y los representantes del Antiguo Régimen. En este ensayo se ofrece una muestra de estas discusiones tomando como referencia lo ocurrido en la implantación de los bailes de máscaras y los recelos que suscitaron en la jerarquía eclesiástica. Los enfrentamientos habidos son un síntoma elocuente de las reticencias con que chocaba la política reformista ilustrada en materia de espectáculos = Both the theatre and public entertainments in general played a cen-tral part in the discussions between the representatives of the enlightened refor-mism and those of the Old Regime. The present study offers a sample of these discussions taking as a basis the events which occurred after the introduction of the masquerades and the suspicion that these aroused in the ecclesiastical hie-rarchy. The confrontations whích rook place are eloquent indications of the reti-cences that the enlightened reformist politicians had to face as regards enter-tainments.
