Se presenta una sinopsis de diversos aspectos relacionados con el agua subterránea en Costa Rica. Incluyendo un complejo marco institucional y legal que ha limitado el desarrollo de la investigación, cuantificación y protección del recuso hídrico. Se muestra la evolución del conocimiento hidrogeológico desde el año 1940 y cómo han influido positivamente las actividades universitarias en ella. Son caracterizados varios de los acuíferos más importantes y se comenta la problemática actual y futura del agua subterránea, que está relacionada con la calidad y reducción de las zonas de recarga, debido al mal uso de la tierra por la falta de planificación urbana en el país.

A synopsis of diverse aspects related with the groundwater in Costa Rica is presented. Including a complex institutional and legal system that has limited the development of the investigation, quantification and protection of the water resource. The evolution of the hydrogeological knowledge is shown from the year 1940 and like the university activities have influenced positively in. Several of the most important aquifers have been characterized and it is commented on the current and future problem of the groundwater, which is related with the quality and reduction of the recharge areas, due to the wrong use of the earth for the lack of urban planning in the country.
