Este artículo trata de reunir la información disponible en las fuentes sobre los orígenes de los tepanecas ¿uno de los principales pueblos aztecas¿, relacionándolos con otros grupos del área central mesoamericana según criterios linguísticos y culturales. Se discute también la etimología del término gentilicio náhuatl, así como sus representaciones glíficas en las fuentes.

This paper tries to meet the information available from the sources on the origins of the Tepanecs ¿one of the main Aztec peoples¿, relating to other groups of the Mesoamerican central area according to linguistic and cultural criteria. The etymology of the term is discussed, as well as its glyphic representations in the sources.
