A phantasm goes around the world: market-radical neoliberalism, which preaches the gospel of "free" market. With reference to the "force of circumstances" of economic globalization, this doctrine of salvation opposes itself to all enlightened ideas of a socially embedded market economy. This paper elucidates the ideological presuppositions in the background of such a market fundamentalism and of the corresponding denouncement of a social market economy. Moreover, the ethical foundations and the political framework of an economy conducive to the good life and to a just living-together of free and equal citizens are outlined.
