Turismo, biodiversidad y academia ¿una opción para la extensión universitaria?: el caso de la Universidad de Los Andes, Mérida-Venezuela

    En este trabajo nos proponemos contribuir a la discusión sobre el turismo desde la perspectiva geográfica, la cual nos lleva a considerar sus distintas expresiones y vinculaciones con las áreas protegidas, la biodiversidad y la educación ambiental. En sus expresiones destaca el turismo científico, el cual constituye una oferta académica de características especiales, constituida por un espacio, generalmente una estación biológica, en la cual los científicos pueden realizar sus investigaciones apoyados en la biodiversidad del área y en una planta turística satisfactoria en el marco de la conservación del ambiente o ecoturismo. En su versión más amplia, la estación de investigación y turismo también se constituye en centro de formación informal para la comunidad y otros turistas, lo cual induce al desarrollo de importantes relaciones con las comunidades de su entorno. Es una discusión que conduce a reinterpretar la geografía humana, la biodiversidad y la educación, como visión integral para proteger y recuperar paisajes y plantearse al turismo científico como una posibilidad de vincular la enseñanza formal e informal con la investigación. Desde estas consideraciones, la Universidad de Los Andes tiene excelentes posibilidades de desarrollar el turismo científico en sus estaciones de investigación por la riqueza de diversidad biológica de las mismas, lo cual exige diversos estudios geoturísticos.

    This work is entended to help discussing about tourism from the geographical perspective, which takes us to regard its different expressions and linkings with protected areas, biodiversity and environmental education. Among its expression scientific tourism is highlighted, which is an academic offer with special characteristics, constituted by a space, generally a biological station, in which scientifics can make their research leant on the area biodiversity and on a satisfactory touristic plant in the framework on environment conservation or ecotourism. In its broader version, the research and the tourism station is also an informal education center for the community and other tourists, which induce the development of relevant relationships with the communities of its environment. This is an argument leading to reinterpret the Human Geography, the biodiversity and the education as a comprehensive vision to protect and recover landscapes and to be set forth to the scientific tourism as a possibility of binding formal and informal teaching with the research. From these considerations, the University of Los Andes has excellent possibilities of developing the scientific tourism in its research stations, due to the biological diversity richness of such stations, which requires several geotouristic studies.
