A partir del análisis de la novela Lo demás es silencio de Augusto Monterroso, en este ensayo se conceptualiza el recurso irónico como un mecanismo que trastoca los textos para decir más de lo que se dice. Esta reconstrucción de sentido se mostrará con ejemplos de la novela, utilizando las herramientas teóricas de Gonzalo-Díaz Migoyo, Wayne Booth y Jonathan Culler. A través de sus propuestas, se ampliará la definición tradicional de ironía incluyendo los requisitos para su producción, así como los mecanismos que ocurren cuando entendemos el sentido irónico para finalmente clasificar la ironía en verbal y situacional.

An analysis of the novel The Rest Is Silence ( Lo demás es silencio ) reveals irony as a mechanism that causes an upheaval of the text to reveal more than what the printed words say. This reconstruction of meaning can be seen in excerpts from the novel through the use of Gonzalo-Diaz Migoyo, Wayne Booth and Jonathan Culler's theoretical tools, which amplify the definition of irony. In addition, these tools include the requirements for the production of irony along with the mechanisms that occur when the reader understands the ironic techniques.
