In 1931 Enrique Jardiel wrote a play called Margarita, Armando y su padre. It was a cynical and icon-smashing adaptation of Alejandro Dumas’ romantic La Dama de las Camelias. In 1937 the Argentine studio Lumiton asked Jardiel to adapt his play for the big screen. Francisco Mugica would direct the film version.
Jardiel’s experience in filmmaking greatly influenced his adaptation of the play.
