The design and miniaturization of a monopolar antenna for 406 MHz SARSAT radio beacons is presented. By considering a pre-fractal structure, the geometrical configuration of the antenna, printed on a planar dielectric substratum, is optimized by means of a particle swarm optimizer in order to minimize the geometrical dimensions of the device and to fit voltage standing wave ratio values defined in the SARSAT standard. The effectiveness of the synthesis approach as well as the feasibility of the designed antenna is assessed through simulations as well as experimental measurements.
