A new type of coplanar-like transmission line is presented based on using the available third dimension to extend the surface area of the center conductor and ground planes. A prototype 3D coplanar line was fabricated using polydimethylsiloxane as the substrate material. Experimental and full-wave electromagnetic simulation results confirm the structure's viability as a low loss, reduced phase velocity microwave waveguide that also has good dispersion characteristics.
