One of the most original and multivalent figures of the intellectuality of the 16th century was, without any doubt, the Father Fernando Oliveira. Contemporaneous of Damião de Góis, André de Resende and Pedro Nunes, this humanist distinguished himself in the field of naval construction, maritime pilotage and war strategy in the sea. The Liuro da Fabrica das Naos, the oldest Iberian treaty on naval construction, set the moment when naval construction left the empiric universe of the shipbuilders of the "ribeiras" and other shipyards and begun to suffer a process of scientific accreditation that passed through the theorization of ship forms and the mathematization of ship structure. As it has extreme importance to Nautical Archaeology, we propose a new glance through a book that has often been described and commented.

Uma das mais originais e multifacetadas figuras da intelectualidade de Quinhentos foi, sem dúvida, o Padre Fernando Oliveira. Contemporâneo de Damião de Góis, André de Resende e Pedro Nunes, este humanista destacou-se no campo da construção naval, da pilotagem marítima e da estratégia da guerra no mar. O Liuro da Fabrica das Naos, o mais antigo tratado ibérico sobre a construção de embarcações, marca o momento em que a construção naval deixa de se encontrar confinada ao universo empírico dos mestres das ribeiras e outros estaleiros e começa a sofrer um processo de acreditação científica, que passou pela teorização das formas dos navios e matematização da respectiva estrutura. Na medida em que se revela de extrema importância para a Arqueologia Náutica, propomos um novo olhar sobre uma obra já por diversas vezes descrita e comentada.
