Conversation with Navarro-Valls [ALEX SEGLERS] In this interview, the jurist Rafael Navarro-Valls, Secretary General of the Universitat Complutense de Madrid (UCM), head of its School of Law and member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation, answers some current and burning questions on multiculturality and the regulation of religious pluralism, particularly addressing the future of laicism and religious freedom in societies which are becoming increasingly more diverse and complex. Amongst other topics, he holds that it is legitimate for the State to reject any type of attempt to become the secular arm of one or any other church to attain the spiritual aims it instils in its followers. Nevertheless, he also asserts that the laicist state cannot overlook the historic humus to which it owes its own consistency. It has been rightly said that Europe was born on three hills: the Acropolis, the Roman Capitol and the Golgotha.
