La producción de manuscritos iluminados durante la Edad Media puede ser considerada como uno de los exponentes más significativos de la creación artística de la época. Una parte importante de los códices tenían una función lítárgica y los destinatarios eran los centros religiosos, los cuales se ocupaban de su elaboración. Existe, sin embargo, en el ámbito hispano, un nutrido grupo de manuscritos que se vinculan directamente a la monarquía, bien por el hecho de que los reyes hayan sido los comitentes o promotores, bien por ser los destinatarios. En general se trata de obras muy cuidadas, que presentan una rica decoración y que constituyen una buena muestra de los gustos y del interés de los monarcas hispanos por el libro; así, desde los reyes asturianos, hasta los Reyes Católicos, pasando por figuras como Alfonso X el Sabio, se puede plantear una nueva visión de la producción de manuscritos medievales.

The illustrated manuscripts, that appeared during the Middle Ages, are considered one of the most significant exponents of the artistic production of that period. An important part of the content of these codeces had a liturgical function as they were made for the religious instituions who elaborated them. However, in the Iberian Peninsula, a large amount of manuscripts were dedicated to the monarchy, either for the fact that the kings were the principals or promoters, or they were the recipients. These carefully refined works contain a highly elaborated decoration and represent a good example of the Iberian monarch's interest and taste were such works are concerned. So, since the Kings of the Kingdom of Asturias through Alfonso X, the Wise, up to the Catholie Kings, a new vision of the production of medieval manuscripts could be appreciated.
