En el último cuarto del siglo XVIII la política sanitaria de la Ilustración española apoyó la puesta en funcionamiento del Real Balneario de Carlos 111, en el pueblo de Trillo, ribereño del Tajo, al que acudió Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos entre 1798 y 1808, para sanar de un estreñimiento crónico y de molestias digestivas producidas, al parecer, por el intento de envenenamiento que sufrió durante el escaso tiempo que ocupó el Ministerio de Gracia y Justicia.

"El Real Balneario de Carlos IlI, -placed in Trillo, beside river Tajo- was opened because of the health policy of the Spanish Enlightenment during the last 25 years of the 18th Century. Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos remained in this spa between 1798 and 1808 in order to recover from his chronic constipation and digestive problems probably produced by the failed poisoning he suffered during the short period of time he worked for Mercy and Justice Ministry.
