En las Islas Canarias, antes de finalizar la segunda década del siglo XVI, ya existían varios hospitales. Establecimientos sanitarios muy modestos, en principio carentes de médicos y cirujanos, pero sumamente necesarios para la población residente más desheredada, así como para atender a los tripulantes y viajeros enfermos de los navíos que, en ruta hacia América, Europa o Africa, se detenían en sus puertos. De características similares, la ilustrativa documentación que aportamos sobre el de la isla de La Palma permite conocer y valorar las «progresistas» normas que, en la segunda mitad de las centuria citada, posibilitaron su favorable evolución en materias tan importantes como higiene, atención médica y alimentaria, administración y otras

Many hospitals existed in the Canary Islands before the end of the second decade of the XVI century. Those hospitals were very humble health institutions which ar the beginning lacked doctors and surgeons, but which were highly necessary for the most desinherited residen! population. They were also needed in order to provide relief to ill crew members and travellers coming from ships that in their way to America, Europe or Africa anchared in Canarian harbours. Containing similar characteristics, the ilustrative documentation about the one of the island of La Palma allows to know and esteem the 'progressist' rules which in the second half of the mentioned century allowed its favourable evolution in so importan! issues such as hygiene, medica! and naurishing care, administration and so others.
