    The official statistics indicate that Portuguese young female are not attracted for the Engineering studies although this has come to suffer a deep change along the last years. The Industrial Engineering course (EGI) of the University of Minho (UM) represents a distinct case with 44% of female graduates during the last 30 years. This occurs in a course that has a primary focus in the Portuguese manufacturing industry with a strong male culture. These factors establish the study importance of the professional career of the Portuguese female industrial engineers. To understand and to identify the paths of career progression of the female industrial engineers from University of Minho, a questionnaire was developed. Results indicate that only 45% of respondents work currently in the manufacturing industry, namely SME'S. In relation to the subsequent formation to the degree, there is a strong preference in professional studies (78%) in detriment to advanced formation like master degree. Focusing the analysis in the manufacturing industry, we concluded that the major functional areas of employment are in the quality (44%) and in the production (34%). This paper is the first contribution to the understanding of the Portuguese reality - women in industrial engineering. This should be of interest of managers and academic concerned with female engineer's recruitment and retention

    As estatísticas oficiais indicam que as jovens portuguesas continuam a não se sentirem atraídas pela Engenharia ainda que esta tenha vindo a sofrer uma mudança profunda ao longo dos últimos anos. Destacandose da realidade portuguesa, o curso de Engenharia e Gestão Industrial (EGI) da Universidade do Minho (UM) apresenta uma elevada representatividade de licenciados do sexo feminino (44%), embora tenha como campo de aplicação preferencial a indústria, de cultura marcadamente masculina. Estes factores determinam a importância do estudo da carreira profissional das licenciadas em EGI. No sentido de compreender e identificar as principais variáveis na progressão da carreira, foi desenvolvido um questionário. Dos resultados obtidos destacamos que apenas 45% das inquiridas trabalham actualmente na indústria transformadora, sobretudo em PME's. Em relação à formação posterior à licenciatura, existe um forte investimento em formação profissional (78%) em detrimento de formação avançada. Centrando a análise na indústria transformadora, as áreas de actuação são maioritariamente nas áreas funcionais da qualidade (44%) e da produção (34%).
