The status of the chairman of the arbitral tribunal is seldom studied. The national legislations only hand out fragmentary information on this subject. The Chairman fulfills nevertheless a determining role .for the swift unfolding of the procedure. His role is especially important during the key moments of a procedure, such as : the organization and the management of' the arbitral hearings, the contacts with the parties and their counsels, the elaboration of the arbitral award, its notification and deposit. This study outlines the role of the chairman of the arbitral tribunal with regards to Belgian law and various other foreign laws.

Le statut du président du tribunal arbitral n'est guère étudie. Les législations nationales ne donnent à ce sujet que des indications fragmentaires. Pourtant le président du tribunal arbitral assume une fonction qui peut être déterminante pour le bon déroulement du processus arbitral. Son rôle est important surtout dans des moments clés de la procédure : l'organisation et la conduite des audiences arbitrales, les contacts avec les parties et leurs conseils, l'élaboration de la sentence, sa notification et son dépôt. L'étude esquisse ce rôle ù la lumière d'une analyse du droit belge et de quelques droits étrangers.
