Type-2 diabetes affects 18.2 million Americans, accounting for 90-95% of all cases. Aerobic exercise is well established and commonly prescribed for controlling blood glucose. However, few studies on resistance training exist. Recently, the impact of moderate and high-intensity resistance training has been examined with respect to blood glucose control and other metabolic variables in noninsulin-dependent diabetic individuals. This article reviews current literature on the effects of resistance training on glycemic control in type-2 diabetics.
