Our paper is about the analysis of chemical criterions in the study of the chemotaxonomy of Cystoseiraceae. We have analysed lipidic extracts of the genera Cystoseira and Bifurcaria collected from different places. We remind the qualitative and /or quantitative variations of the composition of the lipidic extract, depending on the season andfor the place of collecting. Diterpenic and meroditerpenic molecules which have been extracted from the genus Cystoseira, can be grouped together leading to four typical skelettons. In the same way, the genus Dictyota can be characterized by three typical skelettons. Chemistry as morphology, lead to classifications which are similar but not identical. We propose a different way which consists in associating a molecule to a species allowing to characterize this one. The molecule is then called chemical marker and represents the modern definition of the species.
