The sect. Eriostomum (Hoffmanns. et Link) Dumort. is a homogeneous section, well separated from the other sections of the genus Stachys L. (Labiatae). It is made up of species very similar one to the other, which show a great morphological variability both on an individual and on a populational level. Therefore, it is difficult to find a morphological discontinuity that enables us to circumscribe specific or subspecific taxa. In every epoch this particular morphology and the lack of recognition of types have brought about a great confusion in the identification of the taxa. The purpose of the present work is to contribute to a better knowledge of the sect. Eriostomurn in Italy. After a systematic revision based on both dried and living material, it has been recognized to grow in Italy: S. alpina L., S. germanica L. ssp. germanica, S. germanica ssp. salviifolia (Ten.) Gams, S. germanica ssp. dasyanthes (Rafin.) Arcangeli, S. Minkel C. Koch, S. tymphaea Hausskn., S. byzantina C. Koch, S. heraclea All. Each taxon is accompanied by a description, drawings, distribution maps, nomenclatural and systematics comments.
