El presente ensayo analiza el estatuto de la fuente histórica como parte del sistema de mediaciones de lenguaje al que acude el historiador en el práctica de su oficio. El autor discute de qué manera la fuente, antes que una forma neutra de acceso a la realidad del pasado, es una producción cultural sometida a sistemas de significación que son los que permiten su lectura e interpretación. Para ello, acude al estudio de una fuente de finales del siglo XVIII, el diario escrito por José Gómez, que presenta una visión cotidiana de la ciudad de México bajo el gobierno del conde de Revillagigedo. Las preguntas que guían el trabajo son, primero, ¿cómo se produce la fuente histórica?, y segundo, ¿cómo se lee?

This essay analyses the statute of the historic source as part of a system of language mediations to which the historian frequently refers. It reviews the way a source, rather than a neutral way to access the reality of the past, is a cultural production subjected to a system of implication which leads to its reading and interpretation. In orden to achieve this, the author refers to the study of a source in the late years of the 17th century, the diary by José Gómez, a daily view of Mexico City under the rule of count of Revillagigedo. The guiding questions of this work are how is a historic source produced?, and how should it be read?
