The Inquisitorial trials of four beatas who lived during the kingdom of Philip IV offer an approach for a study of female spirituality in the Age of the Counter Reformation. The history of each figure it the history of a conflict, of resistance to the change that introduced the new Tridentine order, whose hinge was the confession and the "persuasion strategies" of the spiritual direction. When seclusion was extended to every expression of religious Efe, beatas, "ilusas" and "falsas santas" developed an extraordinary social function, prophesying mishaps for the Spanish kingdom while enjoying a large and popular acceptance.
