  • Resumen
    • In this paper I explore the realization of violence and gender in the Hispanic media in the United States, specifically soap operas and popular music. For this purpose, I obtained data from a one hour episode of a soap opera entitled ¿Soñar no cuesta nada¿, broadcasted by Univisión and produced and filmed in Miami. I also analyzed two songs by the famous Cuban singers Gloria Estefan and late Celia Cruz. I selected one song from a popular reggaeaton band called ¿Regetón¿; and one song from the popular singers Héctor and Tito. Although the selection of the sample was completely arbitrary, the reason for these corpora is to study violent language in the contemporary mainstream Spanish media. I also selected these songs to cover a greater variety of age groups ¿an adult crowd and a younger crowd. I analyzed the speech acts of directives (direct requests and, in some cases, indirect requests), to show how they create violence, especially when addressed to women.
