Resumen de El tema de la vida como un sueño: de Shakespeare a Calderón

Cayetano Estébanez

  • This paper studies the theme of Life as a Dream from Shakespeare to Calderón, tracing it first from the Greeks to the Renaissance and the Baroque. The topic, which belongs to the common cultural current of Western Europe, undergoes two main connotations in the works of these dramatists. There is in both a gnoseological attitude towards the world, which reveals the confusion between appearance and reality, being solved with a sublimation of the data of experience by the creative poetry, in the case of Shakespeare, and by a moral and religious rooting, in Calderón. Also, in both dramatists the confusion of appearance and reality leads ultimately to a transformation of the characters.
