Among the several key questions that Peter Shaffer poses in his last play, The Gift of the Gorgon, we find a debate concerning the function of theatre nowadays. In this paper we intend to find out Shaffer's own conception as exemplified in this play. To achieve this purpose, we will firstly study the theory of theatre discussed by his main characters (one of which is a playwright himself) and secondly, we will confront this theory with its practice, by analysing Shaffer's own mise-en scene of the play. "A Playwright. The world's most indispensable job." (Shaffer 1993, 16)
