This paper argues for the integration of literature with the teaching of English language in the E.F.L. class. Literary texts can be used as one of the resources available for linguistic development, and one in which exploration of meaning in context leads learners to examination of language. Section One considers the arguments for and against the inclusion of literature in language courses. Section Two examines the criteria for the selection of literary texts. It also explores so me of the dangers inherent in the use of extracts from works of literature and dichotomy simplified readers v. original literary works. Section Three outlines some language based approaches to literature in E.F.L. teaching. Section Four is concerned with the Spanish context and presents a practical example of the use of literature in secondary school teaching.
