Aesop's "The Fox and the Grapes", as well as Lewis Carroll's "The Mock Turtle and the Griffon" from Alice in Wonderland, serve as models for this tale, which Joyce presents to us through the person of the conscientious Professor Jones in the episode of the characters in the ALP Manifesto (Finnegans Wake, pp. 152-59). It relates the complex history of relations between Ireland, Rome and England as well as those between Rome and well-known European historical figures. The religious and political motifs implicit in this serve to present a vast multi-coloured mosaic of historical figures, ideas, terminology and doctrines, couched in the specific language of Finnegans Wake.
