  • Resumen
    • Interest in music education which addresses diverse cultural traditions has mirrored the increasing diversification of American society. In the latter half of the 20th century, music educators were encouraged to introduce varied musical traditions to their students. However, educators frequently lacked training in multicultural music. Challenges continue to face the music educator planning to include authentic music of diverse cultures and specifically Native American music. Basal music series materials have traditionally been a source of information for educators. The purpose of this study was to focus on the extent and authenticity of Native American inclusions in Silver Burdett Making Music K-8 educational materials published between 2002 and 2005. Implications of the study are that guidelines are available to assess the degree to which music education materials include meaningful, authentic educational experiences with Native American music traditions.
