    Une expression apparemment transparente comme "l'animal (les animaux) dans l'Antiquité" recouvre un faisceau de problématiques rattachées à différentes disciplines: l'histoire, l'histoire de l'art, la littérature, la linguistique, la philosophie, et aussi la zoologie qu'il faut bien se garder d'omettre. Dans la perspective unitaire d'une anthropozoologie du monde antique, la présente étude, focalisée sur le monde grec, dégage d'abord un bref inventaire de la documentation littéraire, en accordant une attention particulière à Aristote en raison de son importance exceptionnelle dans l'histoire de la zoologie. Puis elle foumit un aperçu de l'état de la documentation iconographique. Elle pose ensuite le problème de l'identification des espèces, sous l'angle naturaliste et sous l'angle lexical. Enfin elle parcourt quelques-uns des problèmes que les animaux, du fait de leur comportement ou de leur simple existence, ont posés à la curiosité des Grecs et à leur souci de définir et délimiter la nature humaine.

    An easy looking phrase as "animal (or animals) in Antiquity" involves a bunch of problems which are bound to various disciplines: history, art history, literature, linguistics, philosophy and, not to be omitted, zoology. They can be united within an anthropozoology of the Ancient World. This is the frame of the present paper, which first sets a short survey of the literary documents, paying a special attention to Aristotle because of his outstanding importance in the history of zoology, then briefly states the various kinds and qualities of the iconographical documents. It also approaches the question of the identification of species, from the naturalist and the lexicological points of view. It finally examines some of the problems that animals' behaviour or very existence have set to the Greeks as they were not only curious but also concerned about defining and delimiting human nature.
