    The semantics of the Latin verb promitto is considered in this paper. The careful study of its uses in the theatre of the Republican era actually shows that this verb expresses a "speech act", not a gesture. We may therefore reject absolutely the hypothesis made without any attention to Latin language. that the hand (manus or dextra in the accusative form) was the promised object raised when promising. Our study shows that the hand was used for the oath, not for the promise.

    L'examen des emplois du verbe latin promitto dans le théâtre de l'époque républicaine montre avec une cohérence remarquable qu'il s'agit d'un "acte de langage", que l'on promet par la parole. Cela infirme donc totalement l'hypothèse faite trop rapidement et sans aucun examen des données linguistiques par divers spécialistes de philosophie du langage d'un complément implicite qui aurait été la main droite (manus ou dextra à l'accusatif). Notre étude montre que la main est utilisée pour prêter serment, non pour promettre.
