  • The formalization of territorial limits between Mexico and the U.S. was a process that continued beyond the War of 1848. The establishment of a common border was also a result of the rise of nation states, which required a clear demarcation of territories in accordance with new political, judicial, social, and economic needs. The concept of a "border" as an outlying region in constant flux ended when borders gained acceptance as defined limits. This transition was reinforced by both nations with nationalistic symbols and justifications.
