Carlos Serrano de Osma was more than just a movie director. He also wrote biting film critiques, was the author of many articles, and occasionally gave conferences. His most important film critiques came out of his early working years (1933-1946). For the most part he published in the Republican magazine Popular Film and the more specialized film journal Cine Experimental. As was typical of his generation of film critics, Serrano de Osma’s work focused on two recurring themes:
contempt for Spanish film of that time and an impassioned revindication of formal, social film.
